- USING FIXSIT:
-
- FIXSIT works in conjunction with UNSIT.EXE, the freeware
- IBM utility by Brian Uecchi for StuffIt files. Serious
- IBM desktop publishers have long relied on Macintosh art
- providers for high-quality clipart and fonts. Now, with
- the improvements in Fontographer (a Macintosh typeface
- design utility) and the introduction of Type-1 Tools (a
- Creative Bits utility that translates MAC fonts to IBM
- fonts) the challenge to keep our platforms connected
- becomes even more important.
-
- Usually, expanding files from a StuffIt archive is a
- pretty easy affair. Although the IBM UNSIT.EXE utility
- is a little cumbersome, and has a couple bugs, it has
- proven to be fairly reliable.
-
- But there are times when it fails to work altogether.
- Instead of expanding the files, it aborts with a
- terse "Unknown compression type." error message.
-
- That's where FIXSIT comes in. Often times, in these
- .SIT files, the header is incorrect. It contains
- extraneous information that makes perfect sense to
- Macintoshes, but not to IBMs. FIXSIT does its best to
- strip this information out and leave an UNSIT.EXE-
- compatible .SIT file.
-
-
- RUNNING FIXSIT
-
- To run FIXSIT, simply type FIXSIT. It will display a
- list of .SIT files (if any) on the current directory and
- ask you which one you want to fix. Enter the name of
- the bad .SIT file and FIXSIT will take over.
-
- NOTE: You can also type FIXSIT (filename) and FIXSIT
- will run without asking for further input.
-
- When FIXSIT completes, you will be left with two files:
- the original .SIT file and FIXED.SIT, a .SIT file that
- should be compatible with UNSIT.EXE.
-
- Finally run UNSIT X FIXED.SIT, and you should be able
- to retrieve all of the files from the StuffIt archive.
-
- NOTE: The repaired .SIT file has one anamoly. In the
- .SIT header, a byte is used to specify how many
- files are in the archive. FIXSIT has no way of
- knowing how many files are actually present, so
- it sets this byte to 255. This means that
- UNSIT.EXE will ALWAYS abort with an error message
- when operating on FIXED.SIT. However, when
- UNSIT.EXE aborts, it has ALREADY expanded ALL of
- the files orginally archived by StuffIt.
-
-
- FUTURE COMPATIBILITY
-
- FIXSIT can't fix every conceivable problem that can
- occur with .SIT files, nor can I guarantee it will
- effectively fix .SIT files produced by future versions
- of StuffIt. I can say that during my career in desktop
- publishing and during the development of Type-1 Tools, I
- have downloaded dozens of .SIT files from CompuServe and
- GEnie. All of the files that were initially
- incompatible with UNSIT.EXE worked after I used FIXSIT.
